Some Israeli Love

I can’t keep track. Life has been moving fast, so wonderfully and strangely fast. I keep meaning to take the time to write but then I do laundry and make dinner and take care of a toddler instead. So here, quickly, are some links from the homeland. It has been so exciting for me to be recognized there finally, on the heels of the Sami Rohr Prize announcement. And even more exciting that it all happened while I was there. I loved this beautiful article in Haaretz (only for Hebrew speakers, I’m afraid), enjoyed speaking to the illustrious Ilene Prusher on TLV1 Radio, and this wonderfully written…

Blog Tour!

Theodora Armstrong, author of the wonderful short story collection Clear Skies, No Wind, 100% Visibility (which was nominated for the BC Book Prize) asked me to participate in a blog tour, and answer some questions about my writing and process. I’ve been a rotten blogger recently so I figured it would be a chance to post something new. (I have, however, been writing new material, which I am very excited about!) I met Theo at the Vancouver’s Writers Fest and we bonded over being short story writers (our collections were released within days of each other’s), photographers, and mothers. You…

Some exciting news

Remember when I used to blog? What happened to that? Oh, right. I had a baby. And I work. And I write. Well, sometimes I do, though this past month has been all about grant applications and mentoring other writers (which is also great). June 15th is my day to get back to writing and I cannot wait! I do have several pieces of wonderful news to share: 1) The Best Place on Earth is going to be published  in Italian! The publisher is Nuova Editrice Berti, and they make beautiful books. Sono eccitato! 2) I (finally) signed with a literary agency!…

Writer in Residence, New York, Podcast, Interviews, Readings…

It’s a busy busy time. Sean went to work full time, which means I have to juggle momming and writing and teaching and promoting. It’s been crazy. So here’s a quick recap of some new and exciting things that are happening. I am now (and for the next three weeks) the writer in residence at Crescent School in Toronto, working with high school students on their independent study projects for their Writers’ Craft class. The students are wonderful, and I have a little office with some view where I write with no interruptions. It’s pretty great. My event at the…

Cover Girl! (Sort Of)

The Jewish Independent interviewed me for their cover story! Their questions were insightful and interesting and I enjoyed answering them. The online version is posted here. ************ I’m back in Ontario (more about my amazing time in Vancouver soon!) and thrilled to be taking part at the Wild Writers Festival in Waterloo this coming weekend. I’ll be doing two panels on Saturday, November 9. How Geography Defines the Writer, at 11:10 with Tamas Dobozy, Christine Pountney, and Donna Morrissey, and Writers at Risk, at 3:10 with Oakland Ross and Karen Connelly.

CBC The Next Chapter with Shelagh Rogers

I am so excited to be on this week’s Next Chapter with Shelagh Rogers on CBC. I recorded the short segment the morning after my launch, which meant that I could hardly sleep that night. Not only was I  still buzzing from the amazing evening, I also had a case of ESL anxiety, which comes over me sometimes when I need to answer questions on the spot. I worry that my grammar will fail me, my vocabulary will abandon me, I’ll forget how to speak English and end up sounding inarticulate in a distinctly non-writerly way. Of course, as often…

Book Birthday Week

My book and I had quite a week last week. Last Tuesday, March 19th, was my book birthday, the official publishing date I’ve been waiting over a year for. I went swimming that morning, a form of meditation, a way to calm down the swimming in my head. It helped. Then Sean and I visited two Book City stores and checked out my books on the display table, got to sign them and pose with them and smell them (I keep sniffing them; it’s becoming a problem). Then we went to Chapters, where Sean rearranged a table to give my…

On Being Interviewed

I was interviewed several times these past few months. It’s been an interesting experience, being on the other end of the recording device.  Especially since for many years I was the one asking the questions. I started writing for magazines when I was fifteen (which probably had something to do with my poor performance and attendance in school) and continued after my army service. As a teenager, it gave me confidence and direction. It also enriched my life, allowing me to attend events and festivals I could have never afford financially. I was once sent to write about a diving…

The Next Big Thing

I’ve been tagged by the illustrious Terri Favro, author of the recently released The Proxy Bride, in The Next Big Thing, a virtual game of literary blog tag. In The Next Big Thing writers answer ten questions about their work-in-progress, and then link their post to five other writers who then tag five more writers (each!) This never-ending chain of literary awesomeness gives writers an opportunity to discuss their upcoming projects and be exposed to new readers. It also gives readers a glimpse into writers’ process while introducing them to new writers. In other words: everyone wins!  Thank you, Terri,…

Writers to Watch – Hmmm… Aren’t We Forgetting Somebody?

The lovely Amanda Leduc included me on her list of Canadian Up-and-Coming Writers to Watch, which she wrote in response to other, more recognized lists, like the ones put up by CBC Books and the Globe and Mail. Amanda’s list was dedicated to writers who have yet to publish their first book, and it listed some amazing writers I know (through Twitter and literary magazines) like Kris Bertin, Alex Leslie, Will Johnson, Erin Frances Fisher and Trevor Corkum, and others I didn’t know like Braydon Beaulieu, Cody Klippenstein and Marjorie Celona. I was proud and honoured to be on it,…
