My ten-year old made me this tiny bookshelf ❤️❤️❤️

Today my heart aches. Some days are like that. It’s a video of two young Yemeni women, sisters, and their nephew, who were murdered at Nova, dancing before the massacare. It’s a picture of an injured Gazan child sobbing in the rubble. It’s the last message a 13 year old autistic girl left her mother before she was murdered. Today I can’t stop crying.

Songs for the Brokenhearted, my novel about Yemeni

Songs for the Brokenhearted, my novel about Yemeni Jewish women, their loves and their songs, has a pub date, September 10, 2024, and a gorgeous cover I absolutely love. I spent years researching and writing this book and I know it is a huge accomplishment, something to celebrate and enjoy.
And yet, it’s hard to do that during such awful times, the grief we’re experiencing and the horrors we’re witnessing.
I am trying.

My beloved aunt Rivka died this week.
💔
When I was 15 or 14 years old, I travelled with my mother and aunt Rivka back from Tel Aviv to our hometown of Petah Tikva. My mother was driving and somehow, she missed the exit. Now, you can say many things about my amazing mother but easygoingness is not a quality she's known for. She freaked out, becoming increasingly more agitated as minutes passed, We are lost! What are we going to do? Aunt Ricky (as I called her in those days because it seemed to match her level of coolness. It didn't catch on), however, perked up. Ooo, how exciting! she cried. I always wanted to know what was at the next exit! I heard they built a new bridge! We're on an adventure!
I remember watching her in amazement and thinking to myself that this is a moment to remember. That there is something for me to learn here.
My beloved Aunt Rivka was born in Yemen around 1932 and immigrated to Israel at the age of two. She loved traveling and her family, five children and plenty of grandchildren and great-grandchildren (bli ayin hara) who loved her and devotedly took care of her until her last day.
All her life she saved money from her job at a geriatric hospital, collecting penny for penny, and with that money she travelled all over the world, from Honolulu to India. She was blessed with a healthy sense of humour, a mischievous smile, an appreciation for pranks and silliness and bad words, and a love for life that did not diminish even when life served her some tremendously hard blows. The kind that could have destroyed her.
After my grandmother passed away she took on the role of matriarch of our family. Her home was happy, warm, and open to everyone. You didn’t need an invitation. You just had to show up.
When Yediot Aharonot wanted to photograph me for an article about my first book, they suggested that I choose a place that had meaning for me. I chose Rivka's house in Sha'ariya. (more in the comments).
