Speakeasy Featured in Open Book Toronto

Open Book Toronto recently published an article about Speakeasy, the reading series Eufemia and I founded and host, calling it “A chattery, fist-pounding, pint-guzzling good time.” The lovely piece was written by Stacey Madden, who graduated from the program last year. Here’s an excerpt: “There’s a new reading series on the scene — Speakeasy, brought to you by Ayelet Tsabari and Eufemia Fantetti of the Creative Writing MFA program at the University of Guelph. Hosted by the Magpie Tavern at 831 Dundas Street West in Toronto, Speakeasy is a monthly event in which MFA students, instructors and alumni alike can showcase their work.…

1st Runner-Up in PRISM International Non-Fiction Contest

I received some good news in my email the other day. Missing in Action is the 1st runner up in PRISM International  Non-Fiction Contest, and is going to be published in PRISM 49.3, due out in mid April. This was a great surprise, since I wasn’t sure if I was going to send this one to the contest at all! I’m so looking forward to read the other winning stories!

The Marrying Kind Published in Room

Room has published my story The Marrying Kind, in their summer issue. In their content page, they listed it mistakenly under fiction when it is, in fact, non-fiction. I was flattered that the story had fooled them, since I believe that good creative non-fiction should display the same sensibilities and skills we expect from good fiction, but I was also disappointed for the exact same reason. I feel like many people have a narrow view of what creative non-fiction is, and this was an opportunity to broaden that view. Nevertheless, the story is out and I’m thrilled. It is a…

The New Quarterly Recommends My Guide

The New Quarterly, an award winning literary journal, has recently recommended my Guide to Publishing in Literary Magazines on their blog, The Literary Type. They write: “Writer Ayelet Tsabari, a graduate of SFU’s Writing Studio program, has written a detailed guide on how to submit your work to literary magazines: she covers everything, from what to put in your cover letter to what to do with your rejection letters, and in this managing editor’s humble opinion, totally nails it.”

Read My Story In Event Magazine

The newest issue of Event is finally out, where you can read my award winning story “Victim.”  The magazine is available in bookstores, or you can purchase or read a preview of their digital edition. It’s a great issue and you should buy it! The other two winning entries are “Alphabet Autobiografica”by Eufemia Fantetti, a fabulous writer and one of my closest friends. (In fact, she’s the nameless ‘friend’ I refer to in ‘Victim’…) and “Asleep at the Wheel” by Katherine Fawcett. This year’s judge was John Burns, former editor of the Georgia Straight. In his judge’s essay he writes: “In “Victim”, author Ayelet…

Gurjinder Basran: Winner of the Great BC Novel Contest

My friend Gurjinder Basran, a fellow Writer’s Studio graduate, wrote a beautiful first novel about a young second-generation Punjabi girl growing up in BC. The novel was shortlisted for Amazon.com’s 2008 search for the Next Breakthrough Novel and earned her a place in the Vancouver Sun’s annual speculative arts and culture article, “Ones To Watch”.  I read an earlier version of the novel and loved it. I think we could use more second-generation narratives in Canadian literature. A few months ago I read about a Mother Tongue Publishing Search for the Great BC Novel Contest, and e-mailed Gurjinder the link. I…
